    sweet = carbs, salty = sodium, sour = acids, bitter = certain chemicals, umami = glutamates. at least that's what i remember. i'll look it up later.

    um, spicy isn't considered a taste because it isn't detected by the same type of nerves. it's more like a feel than a taste. the sensors that detect spicy are more concentrated in mouth, nose, wounds and some other places. you can feel chili heat up your nose, but you can't stuff sugar up your nostrils and taste sweet. :P
