@SGAtlantis, If the coal just burnt up then there wouldn't be more metl then there was iron. Also, if you melt iron by itself, it turns back into iron when cooled, not metl.

The coal burns away. The iron's melting progress is completely independent from the coal. (except the heat). So technically, they don't melt "together", they only transform into other stuff. (from coal to fire (burns); from iron to metl (melts))

Even though this isn't the first time someone found out about this, it is still Krolcwan's (and lots of other people's) discovery. And it looks like he had a good engineering experience making that machine. :)
