I go around and gather loose and valuable items. I also smelt any ore I find.

okay then I use the Stone to make a stone axe and cut some logs and I start searching for ore and some (edible) berries mushrooms or what else you can eat

BTW when you do stuff that requires scavenging (like "gathering stuff"), there is a small chance that you can get special items.
