and we watched from one of the bubble windows as the sartecs went down onto the deck of the trawler, put the chief on a "backboard", and hoist him, and the Sartec up into the chopper, with the Sartecs then starting to administer medical aid... IV fluid, syringes, oxygen masks, you name it, they were on it!
while we were viewing the sartecs practice a winch-extraction, a call came in from the coordination centre... a chief on a fishing trawler (aprox. 4 km. off the coast of the city of nanaimo) was in a state of medical distress; he needed an immediate medical evacuation! so we were able to stay inside the cormorant while this helicopter was speeding to the boat
so, how a training exercise works is simple, they do the training over the base and the water's off the coast near the base, and in an emergency, there are search and rescue technicians (AKA, SarTecs) who are on standby just in case an emergency comes in from the rescue coordination centre in victoria, the provincial capital...
now, this camp was 3 weeks long, and during the second week, we had the chance to participate in an interesting draw... if you win, you get to go INSIDE one of these heli's while it was IN FLIGHT, IN A TRAINING EXERCISE! and i was one of the three lucky winners...
for those who didnt notice, i was AFK fro most of the summer, and part of that reason was because i was in a royal canadian air cadet summer camp, in CFB comox, on vancouver island. this air force base is home to, i belive, 6 of these magnificent heli's, and 5 DHC-5 buffalo SAR planes, the only ones still active in the world!
you know, there's a reason i built this. guy's; i have an interesting story to tell...
