Neither there is compression... As for friction, there was an experiment on that. However, if I recall correctly, it concluded that the apparent friction effect was caused by pressure waves.

it's not friction heating so much as it is heating due to compression of gases.

Here is my attempt from a while ago: ID:2185127 this used pure PLSM for the heat and an ablative heat shielding, but it's not quite complete as of yet. I will be adding a climatization system there.

A decent way for shielding is put some RFRG gas in front of it. The front will almost immediately become a liquid, and start moving right. Once it hits the object, it acts as an effective heat shield.
