i knock on the structure, in hopes of finding a thinner layer of material, indicating that there would be an entrance.

You put on a space suit and make a daring leap towards the structure. Never mind that you could have stayed inside of the craft, or used the shuttle.

In an attempt to find a docking port on the structure, the ship scrapes one of the rocky bodies, damaging the hull.

Well then, sorry for the delay. The screens stop flickering, and you're now very close to the structure. You can now identify that it is two rocky bodies connected by a large metal tube. There isn't a lot of construction on the outside, but an interior scan clearly shows 3 large zones. 1 for each rocky body, and one for the tube. Bio scans don't show any activity.
