It seems that as the temperature of the lava goes down, the rate of heat exchange between the lava and the air accelerates.

    This might be a result of time instead of the temperature of the lava. As air heats up (in both real life and TPT) it goes up. In this sealed enviorment, it would create convection currents that get stronger over time, thus creating the appearance of a heat exchange oddity.
