This is the basic concept of an Air-to-ground engagement of a mobile SAM, such as an SA-9 or SA-6. The missile, whether it has a radar or infrared seeker always follows the predicted path of it's target. This is called "Lead Pursuit" targeting.

    if you look at it frame by frame, the missle explodes in front of the jet without ever touching it

    Go into the console using the ~ key and then enter !set vx spng 1 , that makes the sponge move along the x-axis to the right at a speed of one. vy moves along the y-axis and - numbers go opposite.
