Geneskl: Your actually an amateur astrophysicist. Youre not even a fully pledged scientist until you've graduated college with the right degree.

Misterpork; If the black hole was in front, we would get a severe case of gravitational lensing. Don't argue with an astrophysicist.

Who's to say the black hole isn't infront of the planet several light years rather than having the planet orbit it?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The "empty" space isnt a black hole itself, its the distorted light fom the stars in space. Basicaly, the black hole is eons away and is distorting the veiw.

@circovik yeah, considering a planet couldn't even safely orbit within about 1 million km of a solar mass black hole, it would be insane to try getting one to orbit within 30000 km of a 500 solar mass

Personally I don't think the planet would be intact, it would have been stretched and melted on the journey to the black hole in the acretion disk. It is nice art though. +1
