    Our sun will jut engulf the orbit of earth,it won't explode and when it 'contracts' taht is the blowing of the outer layers as the outer layers crate a planetary nebulie..

    actually the red giant contracts into a white dwarf. Only SUPERgiants go SUPERnova.
