We had a similar clause before. Perhaps we can lighten the wording a little. It's basically just there for things that are against the rules but we forgot to list. It's very unlikely you will be banned for doing something not on this list.
So it's not a "we can do whatever we want" rule, but a "we can interpret these rules as we see fit" thing. That's how another game I moderate words it, which is a less severe wording because it means that I can't just go and ban people for arbitrary reasons.Edited once by jacob2. Last: 9th May 2018 -

I definitely do, I know there are places like that. I feel like in those cases though, it's bad moderators that allow that to happen, not bad rules. Bad moderators would ban people for whatever they feel like regardless of the rules.
But yeah, I wouldn't want to see that rule used to justify bad moderation either, so we can probably change it. -

One thing that has been annoying me to no end is that it seems like people are bumping ancient threads on a regular basis for no good reason.

The rules are now updated with feedback from this thread and from IRC. Also I made a lot of wording changes that I wanted to do but never did because I was too lazy to properly review the rules before they went live ...
Excessive formatting in forum posts is now against the rules (S2.5)
Rewrite Section R, it's now less of "any negative action is prohibited" and more "Moderators can interpret the rules as they see fit". You won't be banned for arbitrary reasons unless you're doing something obviously wrong.
Notice of rule changes will now be posted in this thread again
Clarify what actions may be taken and that not all rules are equal. Most in game rules now list what actions will be taken for violations
Add a note that some actions are taken automatically
Add a rule against posting offtopic or inappropriate tags. This has been a de facto rule for years, but we never wrote it down (G8)
Update rule S4 and G5 (duplicate rules) to also disallow offensive materials, racism, and politics, and mention that these things aren't allowed in profile information either
Make impersonation rule (S7) less strict, it only applies to users in tpt and other online communities now instead of real life figures
Add a note that comments containing swearing may be deleted (S3)
Clarify / change a lot of wording in many rules
