If the protocol was backwards compatible with <1.8.4, the server could easy be crashed with an NBT exploit. Send it too many nested NBT tags? Enjoy your OutOfMemory exception.

That has nothing to do with the protocol, crashing the server was obviously never part of the protocol.

The bug (from what I know), was that sending the invalid nested NBT tags would crash it because it tried to parse them all, but now it handles invalid stuff nicely. The bug fix does not need to change the protocol at all.

A lot of my homework is due on on April 30th, so I think i'll open up the server on May 1st (2 days).

cracker64 set up a really nice spawn with some signs / some large structure.
He also set up the dynmap plugin which will render a live map online (will post link to it later). The map has several views and can show the overworld, nether, and end, also player position and health. You can hide yourself from the map with /dynmap hide.

Also should I disable creeper holes? They are already disabled on your own claimed areas anyway.

Previous unofficial servers by mniip lasted a few months due to lack of users at the end, hopefully this one will last longer :P
