while a star is in supernova the positive protons and negative electrons fuse to create neutral neutrons. there wont be any iron in them as it would have been ejected from the star in the supernova itself. the trick is in the name 'neutron' star (they are made of neutrons) and also the gas i used to make it was entirely asthetic. not to say they are made of gas. -
