  an ion thruster works by splitting electrons from a flammable gas such as helium or hydrogen. The energy released by splitting the electrons away then propulses the craft forward. But this method of course only works well in oxygenless enviroments as the oxygen isnt as flammable, aswell as earth's nitrogen in its atmosphere, which disrupts the procsess. Trust me. i read books.
