Game also checks from left to right. If you put THRM in a line and put fire in the middle, it'll travel normally to the left, but instantly ignite to the right.
But since the line of check has passed where the c-4 exploded, so the c-4 above the once-c-4 fire isn't noticed by the game until it checks the whole screen again, and says: "Hey, there's c-4 near this fire. Explode the c-4 particle."...and that's how it goes. At least, that's how I understand it. Hope this helps!
But if you put the fire on the bottom, (Remember, the game only checks from up to down.) the game sweeps down to the last pixel line, sees the fire, and explodes the c-4 particles above them saying: "Hey, there's c-4 near this fire. Explode the c-4 particle."
The game checks the layer 1 pixel down from there again, and it sees the fire around the 8-pixel area a c-4 is supposed to detonate if there's a flame in it, so it says: "Hey, there's c-4 near this fire. Explode the c-4 particle." And this goes on and on until it reachs the end.
Let me dumb this down: The game checks the pixels from up to down. So if a fire is in the 8-pixel radious of c-4's blast range, it says: "Hey, there's c-4 near this fire. Explode the c-4 particle." So they explode, and leave fire.
The game processes the pixles form up to down, so the fire going down is like "oh, this is next to fire, explode it" and on the next layer, it goes "oh, this is next to fire, explode it" from the last C4 part creating fire form exploding. For the one going up, the line moved down and exploded the C4 next to fire, and does not cheack the pixles abouve it so it does not all go instantly.
It's particle order. If you look at the C-4 with the extra HUD, the particle ID goes up as you go down. Since I'm pretty sure particle ID determines update order, it can make a chain reaction when the number increases, but not when it decreases
