    TLDR: Fire can smother itself.

Fire has a range of influence of 2 px. For some materials fire can only spread if the fire is in contact with air. The first layer of wood is able to combust as it contacts the air, the next two layers combust from proximity to the first layer. No more layers combust as the fire is smothered by itself first and then the smoke. Fire on the side or top will move upwards creating air pockets allowing combustion to continue, the same can happen on the bottom if there is sufficient air disturbance.
