    The oasis exist because the mountains slow down winds carrying moisture, which creates rain to "feed" it. Rain is still a rare sight though

    Oh wait, if there's too much wind, or temperature difference, that might cause too much sand to be kicked up into the atmosphere and block out all of the sun and cause an ice age and kill everything-

    also, what if the poles are frozen deserts or oceans made of quicksand? Like a tundra would be in real life.

    Ok, the reptiles make sense, maybe the water sinks underneath the desert and into the crust where massive oasis shoot up in that one place because of the continental disturbance?
